Parents’ association warns school heads against imposing extra levies

The Kenya National Parents Association has warned school principals against imposing extra levies when schools reopen in January.

Kericho branch Chairperson Zablon Cheruiyot said that parents are grappling with high cost of living and also reiterated the government’s directive that school heads should not dictate where parents should source school uniforms.

Cheruiyot welcomed the Form 1 selection and placement process, adding that consultations among education stakeholders should be prioritized to avoid disputes in the Ministry of Education.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Elgeyo Marakwet Chairperson Daniel Chelanga assured that Headteachers will not add extra levies and urged Principals to do the same.

“Primary school heads are ready to comply with the directive. Once a directive is issued, it is no longer a matter of discussion. We hereby ask our secondary school counterparts to follow suit,” he stated.

Earlier, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu directed that fees for public boarding schools should remain unchanged and warned school heads against the additional levies.
