MP warns the Govt against increasing school fees

Bumula Member of Parliament (MP) Jack Wamboka

The Member of Parliament (MP) of Bumula Jack Wamboka has cautioned the government against raising fees for both secondary and university education.

Speaking at a press conference in Webuye on Tuesday, Wamboka emphasized that the Government should consider reducing fees instead of increasing them.

“Such fee hikes would disproportionately affect students from humble backgrounds, hindering their access to quality education,” he lamented.

Additionally, Wamboka urged President Ruto’s administration not to disrupt the educational foundations laid by late President Mwai Kibaki and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He praised former President Kenyatta for his efforts in lowering day school fees to Ksh. 9,000 during his tenure, making education more accessible to all.

The MP also called on parents to support legislators who oppose any fee increases and ensure their children remain in school.

On the other hand, Machogu assured parents that there are no plans to increase fees for Form One students entering high school in 2024.

Currently, national secondary schools and Extra County schools charge Ksh. 53,000 annually, while County secondary schools maintain a fee of Ksh. 45,000 per year.
