Master’s programme in nursing kicks off in The Great Lakes University

The vice chancellor Professor Hazel Miseda

The Great Lakes University in Kisumu is now set to offer a master’s programme in nursing.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Hazel Miseda said the initiative has been necessitated by changing global trends.

Prof Miseda said the programme will also enable nurses to realize their dreams of ascending to the highest levels of their careers.

The don said some of the areas to be covered will include concepts in health and development, together with management, enterprise, economics, and institutional development.

She spoke in Kisumu during a pre-conference session ahead of the Kenya National Clinical Officers’ Association annual general meeting.

The don outlined that clinicians have evolved over the years starting with certificate training, diplomas, higher national diplomas, and now degrees.

The acting Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth said Kenya is now geared towards investing in primary healthcare.

Dr. Amoth said the government has over the years spent billions of shillings in curative programmes, which he noted is untenable. He advised county governments to also focus on the same paradigm shift.
