The Governor of Bungoma Kenneth Lusaka has donated Ksh.1 million together with five 50-kilo bags, 5 tins of cooking oil, 5 bales of salt, 10 cartons of milk, and 5 dozen of tea leaves to Butonge High School in Sirisia Constituency.

Speaking at the school expressed his sympathy, acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances that had befallen the institution and hoped that his donation would help restore normalcy.

The school’s deputy principal Timothy Muyekho revealed that approximately 320 students were affected by the tragedy, with dormitories, classrooms, teachers’ quarters, and storage facilities sustaining significant damage.

The Governor also took the opportunity to reassure county residents of their preparedness for the anticipated El Niño, as predicted by weather forecasts.

He urged Butonge teachers and students not to be distracted by the recent tragedy but to remain focused on their studies, especially in preparation for upcoming national examinations.

The Member of Parliament John Waluke assured the school management that his NG-CDF office would also provide assistance.

Additionally, the Bungoma County Special Programs Director confirmed the county’s partnership with the security department and the Kenya Red Cross in launching an El Niño awareness campaign to protect residents from potential catastrophes.

The meteorological department had previously issued an alert predicting El Niño in Kenya during the October-December short rain season, continuing until January 2024.

Wanyonyi highlighted the ongoing disaster management committee consultative forums on El Niño, aimed at educating the community about the impending challenges associated with the phenomenon.

She noted that some parts of Bungoma County had already experienced heavy winds causing infrastructure damage and displacement of people.

With Mt. Elgon in Bungoma County identified as a high-risk area for landslides and floods during El Niño, the county government had taken various precautionary measures, including unblocking drainage systems, advising farmers on early harvesting, and providing health sector outreach to households.
