Prof. Akuno installed as new Jaramogi University VC

Prof. Emily Akuno has been installed as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).

Prof. Akuno, a former Deputy VC in charge of Academic Affairs at Cooperative University of Kenya, takes over from Prof. Stephen Agong’ – whose term ended in June – as the second VC since the institution was awarded a charter in 2013.

The Professor of Music at the Technical University of Kenya took the oath of office on Thursday at a ceremony graced by members of the Senate.

While handing over the instruments of power to the new boss, acting VC Prof. Joseph Bosire stated that they were ready to work with the new VC.

Prof. Akuno thanked the Senate for the warm reception and promised to continue with her predecessor’s open-door management policy.

“The university has grown in the past ten years and I’ve always wanted to join the institution. Now that I am here, I will depend on you for guidance while I’m still new,” she added.

The new VC is an expert in Musical Arts Education for Cultural Relevance and Development.

She has spent over 30 years in University level teaching Research and Administration. She has served in various management capacities in Kenya and abroad including; Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Technical University of Kenya and University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.

Prof. Akuno earned a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree at Kenyatta University and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern State University of Louisiana. She later earned her Doctorate of Philosophy from Kingston University, Surrey, UK.

She has supervised and mentored over 30 postgraduate students at both the Doctoral and Masters degree levels.
