The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has held its first-ever youth congress for its youthful members.
The congress was held yesterday at Kasarani Sports View Hotel Nairobi in a bid to mentor and guide them in taking the union to higher levels.
The congress came after Carol Awili who is KUPPET Kisumu vice chair, Nancy Chelangat KUPPET Nakuru Gender Secretary and Charles Otiende who is KUPPET Vihiga Secretary Secondary attended a high-level training by Educational International known as the John Thompson Fellowship Training.
The three who automatically became the National Youth Advocates in KUPPET with support of the Union’s National Executive Board led by Secretary General Akello Misori, were able to organize the first KUPPET Youth Congress.
Youth leaders in the union across the country were taken through mental health and the role of the youthful teachers in the trade unionism and labour movement.
KUPPET Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima urged the youths of the union to be empowered with information even as the future of the union was in the hands of the youths.
“We are in the era of information and if you want to lead you must seek information and be ahead of those you want to lead, “said Nthurima.
He urged the young teachers to read and understand the Employment Act 2007, Labour Institutions Act 2007, Labour Relations Act 2007, TSC Act 2012, Work Injury Benefits Act 2007, Constitution of Kenya article 41, Basic Education Act 2012 and Occupation Safety and Health Act 2007.
The youthful leaders were tasked to collect the data of all the teachers that are 35 years and below and submit the same to the KUPPET National Youth Advocates by November 1, 2023, and also to ensure that each branch holds a Youth Congress in the year 2024.

We are confident that the impact of your efforts will be felt for generations to come,” said Edwin Kuria, the Assistant Treasurer, KUPPET Murang’a during the congress.
