The government has asked the county directors of education to coordinate the submission of data of the public primary and junior secondary schools (JSS) female students across the country to aid in the procurement of sanitary towels.

“The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to ask you to forward data on girl’s enrolment in soft copy to directorprimarymoe@gmail.com copy to emily.opati@gender.go.ke. a compiled data for your County should reach us before August 23, 2023,” the memo read in part.

Incepted in 2011, and pioneered by the government, the sanitary towels were aimed at curbing the challenge of absenteeism in schools.

According to a 2016 UNESCO report, approximately one in ten schoolgirls in sub-Saharan Africa miss out on attending classes during their menstruation.

In the current fiscal year 2023/2024, the programme has been allocated Ksh940 million for the procurement of sanitary towels for girls in public primary and JSS.
