A wave of student unrest has seen several dormitories razed in Bungoma County since the
beginning of this year interfering with education processes.
Many students have lost property in the infernos, with school authorities pointing fingers at
indiscipline, incitement, and poor relations between the students, their parents, and teachers.
According to Bungoma County Education Director Pius Ng’oma, Bungoma has recently
recorded high cases of school disturbances which have been attributed to the teachers, parents,
and the school community.
“Since the year began almost 30 schools in Bungoma County have faced disturbances and cases
of fire which sounds unpleasant to those supporting schools,” Ng’oma said.
Investigations conducted in schools that rioted in Bungoma showed that some teachers were
involved in fuelling strikes in their schools.
Ng’oma called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to terminate contracts for the
teachers found encouraging strikes in schools.
“Our main purpose is to impart skills to our future generation but not to support them raze
dormitories,” he said.
Some of the learning institutions that have been affected by the raging fires in the county include
Friends Boys’ High School Namwela, in Sirisia Constituency which was on February, closed
indefinitely after a fire razed down a dormitory at night.
Another school was Muliro Secondary School in Tongaren constituency which also experienced
a dawn fire that reduced a dormitory hosting 50 students into ashes three months ago.
Stakeholders have been asked to ensure that there is peace in schools to reduce the cases of fire
and strikes in institutions.
