School closed for two weeks after parents protest, demand Principal’s transfer

Kathithyamaa Secondary School in Matungulu constituency has been closed for two weeks after parents held protests at the school demanding transfer of the Principal.

The parents who stormed the school told the press that the Principal, Mawazo Kyalo, has been misappropriating school funds since he arrived at the station in February.

In addition, they alleged that he has repeatedly denied students of their midterm break and despite paying school fees, learners are not getting enough food.

“We have a problem with the Principal because of how he has been running the school. Before he came everything was okay but systems have now changed and nothing is working. Our children are sent home for fees but they don’t get enough food, neither do the teachers,” said a parent.

“The Principal comes to school once or twice a week. How will he be aware of what is happening at the school?” posed another.

Kyalo denied the allegations and added that all actions he has taken so far were for the betterment of the school.

“When I came to this school there were three tuitions per day, which I scrapped, because the students were not having enough time to do their homework,” he said.

“If they want me to go I will gladly do so because I have done nothing wrong,” he added.

Area Education Officers have closed the school and will meet parents and teachers on Wednesday to find the way forward.
