Butula, All Saints cruise to rugby 15s semis

All Saints Embu and Butula Boys are through to the rugby 15s semi-finals of this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) term one games currently going on in Eldoret.

All Saints beat St Patrick’s Iten 24-7 to chalk their second victory in Pool A and secure their last four slot. Butula continued with their good run thrashing St Anthony’s Boys Kitale 27-10 to cement their place on top of Pool B.

All Saints and Butula will know their semis opponents after the last pool matches. Ofata Jericho and Mang’u will be battling for the remaining slot in Pool A while St Anthony’s or Kisii School likely to qualify from Pool B.

All Saints coach Benson Mwenda said that they want to win their last pool match and focus on the semis.

“So far so good, the boys have done well but they will need to do more because there is no room for mistakes in the semis,” Mwenda said.

His Butula counterpart Shimenga Livondo intimated that he will plan for the semis after knowing his opponents.

“We have qualified for the semis but it is too early to come up with a strategy because we don’t know who we will be playing. We will come up with a winning strategy once we know our opponents,” he said.

In basketball, defending champions Dr Aggrey and Kaya Tiwi must win their last pool matches to advance to the semis and revive hopes of retaining their titles. The two sides lost their second pool matches to risk early exit from the games.

In Group A, Dagoretti High and Lukenya secured their semis slots after winning their second matches. Lukenya beat Friends School Kamusinga 77-69 while Dagoretti thrashed Thika High 109-41. The two sides will meet today to determine the top two spots in their group. Laiser Hill will play Onjiko in their last Group B match.

Dr Aggrey lost 61-72 their second Group B match to former champions Laiser Hill while Kaya Tiwi were defeated 45-42 by  Ototo Mixed from Nyanza region. The two sides must win their last Group matches in order to remain on course to defending their titles. Dr Aggrey will play Wajir High in boys Pool B while Kaya Tiwi will take on unbeaten Butere Girls in Pool A.

Deng Weui starred for Laiser Hill with 17 points whereas Deng Ring and Moses Alier added 15 and 13 points. Joseph Ngundi was the match’s top scorer with 18 points for Dr Aggrey while Deng Akok scored 15.

Loreto Limuru also sealed their place in the semi-finals after beating St Joseph’s Kitale 23-34 in their second Group B match. Our Lady of Mercy South B registered their first victory to revive their hopes of reaching the semis after dismissing Clay International 56-28.
