Slow resumption of learning as confusion mars gubernatorial polls

By Hilda Atika

As learning slowly resumes after general elections break, Kakamega County IEBC Returning Officer (RO) Joseph Ayatta has said that schools will be used as polling stations and tallying centres during the gubernatorial polls.

The RO said gubernatorial elections will be conducted on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, for Kakamega and Mombasa counties as learning continues.

But that was before the pending elections for the two counties were postponed indefinitely by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

The postponement comes after the two counties experienced mix ups of ballot papers, forcing a reprint.

“Although time is not on our side to shift elections from schools which are polling and tallying centres, we will comply with any changes by the Ministry of Education and IEBC,” Ayatta said.

Speaking during a meeting with gubernatorial aspirants at IEBC offices on election preparedness, he noted that security is  beefed up in schools so that learning is not interrupted. He appealed to the public to observe the highest levels of integrity during these exercises.

He said about 90 per cent of polling stations are schools as they offer better logistics with expectations of high voter turnout.
