The Kenya National Union of Teachers-KNUT in West Pokot County has decried the frequent insecurity caused by criminal gangs along the county’s frontiers.
Speaking in his office recently the West Pokot union’s executive secretary Mr. Martin Sembelo asked the communities bordering the West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties to co-exist peacefully to enable smooth running of schools.
He also called upon the government to provide enough security for teachers and pupils in the affected areas.
The Knut official reiterated that following the unrest at the border points most of the schools in Cheptulel region have been affected.
“This being a crucial term for K.C.S.E and K.C.P.E candidates we should have security beefed up so as to provide a conducive atmosphere for the students as they prepare for their final exams”. Sembelo said
He asked the older people in pastoral communities from either side to advise the youth to relinquish out-dated and primitive cultural practises like cattle rustling.
