Sossion not to blame for KNUT woes, Murang’a officials say

Murang’a Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials have defended Secretary General Wilson Sossion from claims that he was responsible for the woes facing the union.

Speaking during election of new officials of the Murang’a South branch on January 30, national Assistant Secretary General Clement Gicharu accused the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of a plot to bring down the union.

“Sossion has nothing to do with the problems facing KNUT. The TSC is deliberately using propaganda to kill the union and the trade union movement in this country,” he said.

Gicharu claimed that TSC had been frustrating the union’s operations by starving it of resources.

“Some of our offices have been closed down due to rent arrears. The teachers’ employer has refused to deduct members’ money meant for the union,” said Gicharu.

Murang’a South KNUT Executive Secretary John Njata, who was re-elected in the election, said the government had neglected teachers by allowing TSC to continue frustrating KNUT. Other officials who were elected are Andrew Maina as Chairman, John Mwangi (Treasurer), Laban Mwiruri (vice-chairman), Joseph Ndonga (assistant executive secretary), Julius Wanjiru (vice treasurer), Jane Wangare (women representative) and Nancy Njeri as a representative of People Living With Disabilities
