A total of 8,915 candidates who qualified for university degree programmes after the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination chose to pursue diploma and other non-degree courses in tertiary institutions, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced.
Speaking on Wednesday during the release of the 2026/2027 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) placement results, Ogamba said 202,133 students secured admission to degree programmes out of the 270,508 candidates who attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome said the agency has recorded a steady increase in the number of students qualifying for university admission.
She noted that KUCCPS has successfully placed and accounted for 81 per cent of the candidates who attained a C+ and above in the 2025 KCSE examination.

The placement results also show significant enrolment in other tertiary institutions. A total of 28,246 students were placed at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), while 765 were admitted to Kenya Utalii College. Another 875 students secured places in Secondary Teacher Training College (TTC) programmes, and 500 were selected for diploma programmes at the Kenya School of Law.
The 2026/2027 placement exercise was conducted against a backdrop of expanded capacity in higher education institutions. Universities offered a total of 327,157 vacancies across 43 public and 33 private universities, exceeding the 270,508 candidates who qualified for degree programmes.
In addition to university placements, the government has made available more than one million training opportunities in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, providing students with multiple pathways to pursue higher education and acquire technical skills.
Students can access their placement results by logging into the KUCCPS student portal using their KCSE index numbers to confirm the institutions and courses to which they have been assigned.
