A total of 181 students were affected after a fire destroyed a dormitory at OlButyo Boys High School in Kongasis Ward, Chepalungu Sub-County, Bomet County, on Sunday evening.
According to the Bomet County Department of Disaster Management, a distress call was received at about 6:39pm reporting that the dormitory was on fire. The blaze destroyed the facility, with nothing salvaged after the fire was brought under control. No injuries or deaths were reported, with all the affected students accounted for following the incident.
The department said the cause of the fire was yet to be established as authorities commenced efforts to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident. The value of property destroyed was also yet to be established, with an assessment expected to provide details of the losses suffered by the school. The incident prompted an emergency response as efforts were mounted to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other facilities within the school compound.
