What Ivory Bangles teaches about love, fate and human existence

In many African communities, stories are more than entertainment. They are mirrors that reflect our fears, beliefs, values, and realities. Eric Ng’maryo’s short story Ivory Bangles is one such story.

Set in a traditional African society, the narrative explores love, fate, culture, and the unpredictable power of nature. Although the story ends tragically, it leaves readers with profound lessons about life and human existence.

The story centres on Mtorobo, an ageing warrior and respected member of his community. One day, after noticing unusual blood specks on the liver of a slaughtered goat, he consults a traditional seer.

The seer’s divination reveals a disturbing prophecy: Mtorobo’s wife is going to die. The prediction shakes him deeply because he loves his wife dearly.

Unlike many men in his society, Mtorobo has remained faithful to one wife throughout his life. Their marriage has survived the test of time and has become the envy of both humans and spirits, according to the seer.

Mtorobo’s distress reflects the depth of genuine love. In a society where polygamy is accepted and even encouraged, he chooses devotion to a single wife.

The story presents a marriage built on mutual respect, affection, and companionship. Even in old age, the couple still enjoy each other’s company and cherish the memories they have built together.

Their relationship reminds modern readers that successful marriages are founded not merely on material wealth but on commitment and loyalty.

Fate and predestination

One of the most striking themes in the story is fate and predestination.

After hearing the prophecy, Mtorobo struggles with the possibility of losing his wife. Yet despite his anxiety, events unfold exactly as predicted.

His wife receives the news calmly and refuses to allow fear to control her life. She understands that death is an inevitable reality that no human being can permanently avoid.

Her acceptance of fate contrasts sharply with her husband’s fear and worry.

This theme resonates strongly in contemporary Kenyan society. Many people spend enormous amounts of time worrying about uncertain futures. Some fear illness, failure, unemployment, or death itself.

Yet Ivory Bangles suggests that excessive worry cannot change what is destined to happen. While people should take reasonable precautions, they should also learn to live fully rather than be paralysed by fear.

Traditional beliefs and culture

The story also explores the influence of traditional beliefs.

Mtorobo trusts the seer’s prophecy because traditional religion and divination play a significant role in his community. The consultation of seers, interpretation of omens, and belief in ancestral spirits demonstrate the importance of culture in shaping people’s perceptions of life and death.

Whether readers agree with such beliefs or not, the story illustrates how cultural traditions help communities explain events that appear beyond human understanding.

Human interaction with nature

Another important issue highlighted in the narrative is human interaction with nature.

The tragic death of Mtorobo’s wife occurs when a wounded bull elephant attacks her while she is working in a banana plantation.

The elephant becomes a symbol of nature’s immense power. Human beings may cultivate land and build homes, but nature often reminds them that they are not entirely in control.

This theme remains relevant in modern Kenya. Communities living near national parks frequently experience conflicts with wildlife.

Elephants destroy crops, predators attack livestock, and sometimes people lose their lives.

The story therefore reflects a reality that continues to affect many rural communities today. It reminds governments, conservationists, and local residents of the need to find sustainable ways of coexisting with wildlife.

The symbolism of the ivory bangles

The ivory bangles themselves carry deep symbolic significance.

They are not merely ornaments. They represent the couple’s enduring love, shared history, and treasured memories.

Mtorobo carved them from elephant ivory and gave them to his wife as a symbol of affection.

Throughout the story, the bangles signify beauty, devotion, and marital happiness. Their destruction during the elephant attack symbolises the violent end of a relationship that had endured for decades.

The shattered bangles become a powerful image of how quickly life can change.

Lessons on relationships

The story also touches on social issues such as domestic violence.

Through references to Leveti, the daughter-in-law who suffers abuse from her husband, readers see the contrast between Mtorobo’s loving marriage and the destructive relationships that exist elsewhere.

The narrative quietly condemns violence within families and presents respect and kindness as the foundations of healthy relationships.

A lesson on the fragility of life

Ultimately, Ivory Bangles is a moving story about the fragility of life.

It teaches that love is precious, fate is sometimes unavoidable, and nature commands respect.

The tragedy that befalls Mtorobo’s wife reminds readers that life can change unexpectedly, making it essential to cherish loved ones while they are still present.

In a world increasingly dominated by material pursuits, the story encourages us to value relationships, appreciate each day, and recognize that the greatest treasures in life are often not things, but people.
