A West Pokot-based football referee, Daniel Kiptoo, has encouraged fathers to prioritize family time even as they pursue demanding professional responsibilities.

Kiptoo made the appeal while reflecting on how he spent this year’s Father’s Day with his family after a busy weekend officiating secondary school tournament matches in Kaptabuk, Lelan, in Pokot South Sub-county.

He said he began the day by attending a two-hour church service with his family before briefly engaging with fellow referees and colleagues. He later treated his family to a local tour within West Pokot County, where they visited various historical and geographical sites, appreciating the region’s rivers, hills, valleys, and mountains. The family carried refreshments and snacks for the outing, which lasted about two and a half hours.

In the afternoon, the family returned home for a meal prepared by the house help, featuring ugali, fresh managu, and fermented milk, commonly known as mursik. The evening was spent relaxing at home while watching international football matches on television.

“Although I am frequently involved in officiating football games in and outside the county, I always make time to relax and socialize with my family. My wife and children are very understanding of my busy schedule,” said Kiptoo.

Kiptoo, an alumnus of Moi University, was among the first cohort of referees trained in West Pokot County. He regularly officiates Division Two league matches in the North Rift region and has handled fixtures involving teams such as Chewoyet FC and Kamorow FC in West Pokot, Black Stars and Elim in Trans Nzoia, 105 FC in Eldoret, and Kalokol FC in Turkana County.

He urged fellow fathers to intentionally create time for their families despite tight work schedules.

“As my day was enjoyable and special with my family during Father’s Day, I urge fellow fathers to always plan and spend time with their families regardless of how tight their schedules are,” he said.
