Upgrade Kiptiroko Poly to unlock youth potential, Bungoma leaders urged

Denis Cherenje calls for the upgrade of Kiptiroko Polytechnic during a forum in Mt Elgon Subcounty.

A youth empowerment leader in Bungoma County is calling for a comprehensive overhaul of Kiptiroko Polytechnic in Mt Elgon Sub-County to equip students with market-driven skills. The proposed upgrades include introducing courses in Early Childhood Education (ECDE), Food and Beverages, and Business, which are in high demand.

Speaking at a local forum, the leader, Cherenje, emphasised that the institution has the potential to become a hub for employable skills, especially with partners abroad looking to recruit skilled youth. “The polytechnic should be upgraded soonest to benefit our learners,” Cherenje urged, adding that the current situation forces youth to seek opportunities elsewhere due to limited course options.

Cherenje highlighted that the proposed courses would not only cater to local needs but also position the youth for international opportunities. “We have partners abroad looking for skilled individuals, and our youth can tap into these opportunities if they acquire the right skills,” he said.

Furthermore, Cherenje stressed the need for Kiptiroko Polytechnic to become an examination centre, boosting confidence among students and stakeholders. He also emphasised the importance of public participation in matters affecting Mt Elgon residents, ensuring they are informed and involved in decision-making processes.

The youth leader also called on local leaders to support boda boda operators by facilitating access to driving schools and NTSA licenses, enhancing their employability and safety on the roads.

Additionally, Cherenje advocated for full scholarships for bright students from humble backgrounds, enabling them to pursue their dreams without financial constraints. He emphasised that education is a key driver of economic growth and urged stakeholders to prioritise the upgrade of Kiptiroko Polytechnic.

To drive this agenda forward, Cherenje announced plans to organise a forum with youth and education stakeholders to discuss the need for youth empowerment in the region. “I’ll personally organise a forum to bring together stakeholders and discuss ways to empower our youth,” he said.
