University of Kabianga student and musician Lawrence Malot has rejected social media claims that he was driving under the influence of alcohol when he was involved in a road accident in Kericho County.
Malot said the crash occurred along the Kapsuser-Tegat road as he travelled from Eldoret to Kericho after working on a music project.
In a statement on Facebook, the musician said he had earlier dropped off music producer Tuwei and a mother travelling with her child before proceeding with another passenger, identified as Mr Pilot.
He said heavy traffic caused by another accident near Kapsuser forced him to divert from the normal route.
Malot said he later encountered children on the road and was forced to make an emergency manoeuvre to avoid hitting them.
“Two moms with three little kids were on the road. There was no other option because the children became confused on the road and ran towards different directions as there was an event in that area,” he said.
He said the vehicle overturned after he swerved off the road.
“I had to only turn the vehicle off the road, and because it was a valley, it overturned,” Malot said.
Malot suffers fractured hand
He and Mr Pilot managed to get out of the vehicle, although Malot suffered a fracture to his right hand.
He said he was first taken to Sosiot Medical Centre but found the facility closed.
He was subsequently taken to Chepnyogaa Health Centre, where he received first aid and wound repair.
Mr Pilot was later taken to Kericho Referral Hospital for further assessment after becoming confused following the crash.
Malot said X-rays showed that he had fractured his right hand.
“We are now okay,” he said.
The musician also addressed reports circulating on social media that eight people were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
“I’m not drunk. I personally don’t drink,” Malot said.
He explained that he had driven from Eldoret to Kericho and that, after dropping off Tuwei and the mother with her child, only he and Mr Pilot remained in the vehicle.
Malot thanked friends and well-wishers for visiting him, calling and sending messages of support during his recovery.

He said he was now at the University of Kabianga and was grateful that he and his passenger survived the crash.
