The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a show-cause letter to Alliance Girls High School Chief Principal, Margaret Njeru, over an alleged unauthorized increase in school fees from Ksh53,000 to Ksh120,000.
The TSC faults the principal for breaching government policy by adjusting fees without the required approval from the cabinet secretary for education.
She has been given seven days to respond and justify why disciplinary action should not be taken against her.
According to the commission, the Ministry of Education has set a cap of Ksh53,000 for national secondary schools to ensure access and affordability, and any revision beyond this limit must receive formal approval from the ministry, which was not sought in this case.
The sharp fee increment sparked complaints from parents and stakeholders, who questioned both the legality and the burden imposed on families. It is these concerns that prompted scrutiny and subsequent action by the TSC.
Meanwhile, Basic Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok has clarified that the ministry was not aware of the changes at the time they were implemented.
“The ministry did not approve any fee increment at Alliance Girls. We only became aware after stakeholders raised complaints,” said Bitok.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about financial oversight and governance in public schools, especially top national institutions.
Education stakeholders are now calling for tighter monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar cases in the future.
If found culpable, the principal could face disciplinary measures, including possible removal from office, depending on the outcome of her response.
The case is likely to serve as a warning to school administrators across the country on strict adherence to government regulations regarding school fees.
