The County Government of Trans Nzoia has strengthened its commitment to student welfare and youth empowerment after Governor George Natembeya donated sports jerseys and dignity towels to students from the county studying at the University of Eldoret.

The donation was presented to members of the Trans Nzoia County University of Eldoret Students Association (TACUESA) to support student welfare while promoting sports and talent development.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Natembeya, County Secretary Truphosa Amere challenged students to develop innovative and sustainable business ideas capable of improving their welfare beyond university life.

She said the county government is ready to provide capacity-building programmes and technical support for viable youth-led enterprises.

“We want you to think beyond your university years. Develop sustainable business ideas that will improve the welfare of students. Once you have a well-structured proposal, the county government will provide the necessary capacity building to help you turn it into a successful venture,” she said.

Amere also clarified that the county government’s education budget currently prioritises Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), while university bursaries fall under the responsibility of the national government.

Youth empowerment

County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism Eliud Tormoi urged the students to remain focused on their studies while embracing leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship.

“You are ambassadors of Trans Nzoia County wherever you are. Work hard, remain visionary and uphold the values of integrity and respect. Come up with practical business ideas and the county government will explore ways of supporting their implementation,” he said.

Chief Youth Development Officer John Etori encouraged the students to work closely with county youth officers while preparing business proposals to ensure they meet the required standards.

Students welcome support

TACUESA Chairperson Ndiema Silvena thanked Governor Natembeya for the donation, describing it as a timely intervention that would strengthen sports activities while improving student welfare, particularly through the provision of dignity towels for female students.

“We sincerely appreciate Governor George Natembeya for standing with students from Trans Nzoia. The jerseys will inspire our sports teams while the dignity towels will significantly support the welfare of our members. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with the county government,” she said.

Silvena added that the association, which has more than 500 members, had also submitted proposals seeking county support for student welfare programmes targeting vulnerable learners.

The students reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the County Government of Trans Nzoia in promoting youth empowerment, leadership and innovation.
