Top private school in Bunyala appeals for funding from NGCDF to stay afloat

Chawo Star Academy Principal Anne Burale. The school is appealing for financial assistance from the Budalang'i NGCDF to stay afloat.

A top private school that emerged second in Bunyala Sub-county in the 2023 KCPE is sending a desperate appeal to area MP Raphael Wanjala and his NGCDF committee for emergency assistance.

In an exclusive interview with Education News at the school, Chawo Star Academy Director Anne Mwajuma Burale said the school started in 2010 and has been operating under squalid conditions considering that it is located in a flood prone area.

Representing the Board of Management (BoM), she said that despite its excellent academic performance that has seen the school sending students to various prestigious secondary schools, including Maranda and Kamusinga, it has undergone a lot of infrastructural challenges.

She appealed to the MP to consider extending his development agenda to all learning institutions in the Constituency, whether private or public, emphasizing that all learners belong to Budalang’i.

“We are, with due respect, appealing to our honourable MP Raphael Wanjala and his NG-CDF committee to include our school in their development agenda. We don’t have an administration block and we also have inadequate classrooms and toilet facilities,” said the director.

She said the academy is also catering for the education of bright and needy pupils whose parents or guardians cannot afford to pay their fees.

“Parents and guardians of bright but needy pupils pay fees in kind such as maize, beans and rice instead of cash,” she said, lauding former Busia Woman Rep Florence Mutua who, during her tenure, donated Ksh100,000 that enabled them to process the title deed.

The academy’s key stakeholder Cleophus Odumbe  on his part appealed to Busia Governor Dr Paul Otuoma to allocate them funds as they have played a part in the provision of quality education.

Chawo Star Academy is among the four private schools in Bunyala Sub-county that have been performing well in KCPE for four consecutive years, getting  a mean score of 326.46 in the 2023 KCPE, 368.38 in 2022 and 372.14 in 2021.
