Teachers living with disabilities continue to make an immense contribution to the education sector despite the unique challenges they face in their daily professional and personal lives.

In recognition of these challenges, the government has provided mechanisms for disability assessment and tax exemption to support affected individuals.

In Nakuru County, several public hospitals conducted disability assessments to ensure that teachers and other professionals obtain official certification and access government support programs.

Disability assessments within the county are carried out in designated public health facilities including Nakuru Provincial General Hospital, Molo Sub-County Hospital, Bahati Sub-County Hospital, Gilgil Sub-County Hospital, and Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.

The assessment clinics operate from Monday to Friday, making it easier for applicants to schedule evaluations during the week.

Most of these facilities primarily conduct physical disability assessments. These evaluations determine the extent of physical impairment and help establish eligibility for disability certification and related benefits.

However, for assessments that go beyond physical disabilities, such as eye conditions, chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, or neurological disorders, applicants are advised to visit Nakuru Provincial General Hospital (PGH).

At Nakuru PGH, specialized medical teams handle various categories of disabilities. The facility provides assessments for visual impairments, chronic diseases, mental health conditions, and neurological disorders.

Medical evaluations at PGH are conducted at Block 4, where applicants undergo detailed medical examinations by relevant specialists.

Meanwhile, Naivasha Sub-County Hospital offers both physical and eye assessments, providing an additional option for applicants requiring visual disability evaluation.

The booking process for disability assessment is straightforward.

Applicants are required to pay a booking fee of Ksh 700 at the respective hospital before the assessment is conducted. After the medical examination, a report is issued which forms a key component in the process of applying for tax exemption.

The teachers were also undertaken through the tax exemption  process. On the requirements; teachers seeking tax relief due to disability must submit several documents to facilitate the application process.

These include:

1.A Disability Assessment Medical Report issued after the official medical evaluation.

2.A Specialist Medical Report from the relevant medical specialist depending on the disability category. For instance, an orthopedic doctor provides reports for physical disabilities, an oncologist for cancer-related conditions, and an ophthalmologist for visual impairments.

3.A Tax Compliance Certificate issued by Kenya Revenue Authority confirming the applicant’s compliance with tax obligations.

4.A Tax Income Exemption Certificate application.

5.The applicant’s KRA PIN certificate.

6.An Employer’s Letter confirming employment status.

7.A copy of the applicant’s National Identification Card.

8.A valid Disability Certificate issued by the relevant authorities.

9.A passport-size photograph for official documentation.

For teachers, disability tax exemption offers significant financial relief and recognition of the additional costs associated with living with a disability. It ensures that educators continue serving learners without being disproportionately burdened by taxation.

Moreover, awareness of the assessment process and documentation requirements helps teachers prepare adequately before visiting the hospitals.

Education stakeholders, including teacher unions and professional bodies, are encouraged to disseminate this information widely to ensure that eligible members benefit from available government support.

In conclusion, the structured disability assessment system within Nakuru County provides a critical pathway for teachers and other professionals to access certification and tax relief.

By utilizing facilities such as Nakuru PGH, Naivasha, Gilgil, Bahati, and Molo hospitals, applicants can undergo the necessary medical evaluations and initiate the process toward securing disability tax exemption benefits.
