- Teachers serving in acting DHOI and HOI positions across nine counties have emerged as likely major beneficiaries of TSC’s promotion interviews set for late September.
- The promotion system has reportedly been configured to advance eligible acting administrators to the next job grade regardless of how long they have held their current grade.
- TSC has urged affected teachers to prepare for the interviews and await official communication on the final list of eligible candidates and promotion criteria.
Teachers currently serving in acting capacities as Deputy Heads of Institution (DHOIs) and Heads of Institution (HOIs) in nine counties could be among the biggest beneficiaries of the upcoming teacher promotion interviews scheduled for the last week of September.
Information circulating within the teaching fraternity indicates that the promotion system has been configured to move eligible teachers serving in these acting administrative positions to the next immediate job grade, irrespective of the length of time they have spent in their current grade. The counties identified are Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Lamu, Tana River, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit and Isiolo.
If implemented as indicated, the arrangement could provide a significant career boost to teachers who have been performing administrative responsibilities while awaiting formal appointment or promotion to the corresponding job group. The development is expected to attract considerable interest among teachers in the affected counties, particularly those who have taken on additional institutional leadership responsibilities without substantive promotion.
Sossion and Lentoijoni take the TSC hot seat: Teachers now want results, not rhetoric
The upcoming interviews are part of the broader promotion process through which the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) seeks to fill available promotional vacancies and provide career progression opportunities for teachers. However, teachers are expected to meet the applicable requirements and undergo the official assessment and interview process before any promotion is confirmed.
The reported configuration of the system could ease one of the longstanding concerns among acting administrators, who have often sought recognition and formal progression commensurate with the responsibilities they undertake. Teachers in the affected counties have been urged to prepare adequately for the September interviews and await official communication from TSC on the final list of eligible candidates and the applicable promotion criteria.
If confirmed, the development would represent a major opportunity for teachers serving in some of the country’s most geographically remote counties, many of whom have continued to shoulder school leadership responsibilities amid challenging working conditions.
