A teacher has been found dead in his rented house in Itembe, Bomet County, in what police are treating as a suspected suicide.
The teacher, who was reportedly living alone, had allegedly been absent from duty for several days, prompting a search by concerned members of the community.
The search led residents to his rented house, where his body was discovered in the bedroom.
Itembe area chief Emmanuel Rop confirmed the incident, saying the teacher had in recent days struggled with alcohol abuse and was believed to have been facing family-related challenges.
According to Rop, the teacher’s wife had left with their children, leaving him living alone.
“He had become a drunkard, and we suspect that he had some family issues,” Rop said.

The chief said investigations had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the teacher’s death.
He urged residents experiencing family disagreements or other challenges to seek help and resolve their differences amicably rather than resorting to actions that could result in loss of life.

The incident has renewed concern over reported cases of suicide in the South Rift region, with church leaders calling on families and community members to support people facing emotional, marital or financial difficulties.
The leaders have urged those struggling with personal problems to seek counselling, support from trusted people and professional help where necessary.

The body has been taken to the Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
