A 29-year-old teacher, Denis Kipkoech Chepkwony, is in police custody at Kargi Police Station in Laisamis constituency, Marsabit county, for allegedly engaging in repeated unlawful sexual acts with a 14-year-old Grade 7 pupil, resulting to pregnancy.

According to police reports, the alleged incidents occurred between April 5 and April 18, 2026, at the suspect’s rented residence outside the school compound, where he reportedly lured the minor under the guise of his position as her class teacher.

Loiyangalani sub-county Police Commander Nicholas Mutua confirmed the arrest, stating that preliminary investigations indicate a pattern of manipulation and abuse of trust by the suspect, who allegedly exploited his authority over the child.

Authorities say the suspect is expected to be transferred to Loiyangalani Police Station before being arraigned in court as investigations continue.

The case has sparked widespread condemnation from members of the public and education stakeholders, who have called for the strongest possible legal action, describing the allegations as deeply disturbing and a betrayal of the teaching profession.

Child protection advocates have emphasized that such cases highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safeguarding policies within schools, as well as tougher penalties to deter offenders who prey on vulnerable learners.

As the investigation proceeds, the incident stands as a grim reminder of the responsibility entrusted to educators and the devastating consequences when that trust is violated.

Authorities have pledged that justice will take its full course.
