Tambach University opening excites residents as over 400 students enrol

Tambach University in Elgeyo Marakwet County. Residents have welcomed the institution’s opening, saying it will expand access to higher education and create new business and investment opportunities in the area.
  • Residents say Tambach University will bring higher education closer to students who previously travelled long distances to study.
  • More than 400 students have already enrolled, raising hopes that the institution will attract further growth and investment.
  • Locals expect rising demand for housing, food and other services to create new economic opportunities around the university.

For residents of Elgeyo Marakwet, the opening of Tambach University represents more than the arrival of a new institution of higher learning.

They see it as a new chapter for the community and an opportunity to transform the region.

Led by Emily Kirwa and Elizabeth Korir, the residents expressed joy at the university’s opening, saying local students would no longer have to travel long distances to pursue higher education.

“For many years, our young people have been forced to travel far in search of higher education. Having a university here means they can study closer to home,” Kirwa said.

New opportunities for residents

The residents said the institution was already beginning to create opportunities beyond education, particularly in housing and small businesses.

They urged residents to construct rental houses and establish businesses that can serve students, lecturers and other university employees.

“There is a growing population around the university. Students need houses, food and other services, and this is an opportunity for the local community to benefit,” Korir said.

The residents said they were particularly encouraged by the university’s early enrolment figures. More than 400 students have already enrolled, with an estimated 95 per cent attendance.

They said the figures were a positive sign for an institution that is still in its early stages.

“We are happy with the enrolment and attendance. It shows that people have confidence in the institution, and we are committed to supporting it so that it succeeds,” Korir said.

The residents also pledged to work with the university and other stakeholders to address challenges that may arise as the institution grows.

They described the university as a potential game-changer for Elgeyo Marakwet, saying it could help reshape the region’s economic and social outlook.

The area has for years been associated with banditry, but the residents said the university offered an opportunity to put education, investment and development at the centre of the county’s identity.
