Nestled in the high-altitude town of Iten in Elgeyo Marakwet County, St. Patrick’s High School Iten stands as one of Kenya’s most iconic institutions, celebrated globally for its unique blend of academic excellence and sporting greatness.
Founded in 1961 by the Patrician Brothers, Irish missionaries who arrived in Kenya in the post-Mau Mau period, the boys-only boarding school was established at a time when educational opportunities for African boys in the region were still very limited. From humble beginnings, the school has grown into a national powerhouse, currently hosting about 1,600 students drawn from all parts of Kenya. Today, the institution is under the leadership of Chief Principal Peter Rotich, who continues to uphold its strong traditions of discipline, academic excellence, and holistic development.
St. Patrick’s High School is widely recognized for its extraordinary contribution to world athletics. The school has produced a remarkable number of Olympic champions, world record holders, and international medalists, earning it global attention and frequent association with Guinness-level sporting excellence. Its athletics program has been shaped by legendary Irish coach Brother Colm O’Connell, who arrived in Iten in 1976 expecting to stay only a few months but instead dedicated his life to nurturing talent that would transform global middle- and long-distance running.

Among the school’s most celebrated alumni are Peter Rono, Olympic gold medalist in the 800 metres, and Matthew Birir, also an Olympic gold medalist and world junior champion. Ibrahim Hussein became a pioneer in marathon history as the first African to win the Boston Marathon, while Japheth Kimutai and Cornelius Chirchir set world junior records that placed them among the best young athletes of their time. Michael Boit went on to become an Olympic bronze medalist and respected academic in sports science. The school also produced world champions such as Wilson Boit Kipketer and the multiple world record holder Wilson Kipketer, while Isaac Songok achieved global success as a World Youth and Cross Country champion. One of its most famous success stories is David Rudisha, who set the 800 metres world record and won Olympic gold in dominant fashion.
Beyond athletics, St. Patrick’s High School has built a strong reputation in academics. The school consistently ranks among the top secondary schools nationally, reflecting its commitment to intellectual discipline and excellence. It is also known for hosting the prestigious Iten Maths Contest, a national competition established in 1975 that continues to attract some of the brightest students in the country. The institution was among the earliest schools in Kenya to adopt computer education in 1989, demonstrating a forward-looking approach to learning and technology.
In addition to academics and athletics, the school has excelled in other disciplines such as volleyball and rugby. Its volleyball team has been one of the most dominant in the country, winning multiple national championships over the years. Rugby has also grown in strength, with the school developing disciplined and competitive teams that perform well in regional and national tournaments. These sporting successes reflect the school’s broader philosophy of nurturing well-rounded students who excel in both physical and intellectual pursuits.

From the athletics tracks of Iten to classrooms and sports fields, St. Patrick’s High School remains a symbol of discipline, resilience, and excellence. Under Principal Peter Rotich, the institution continues to shape future leaders, scholars, and champions who carry its legacy to the national and global stage.
