Sossion leads World Teachers’ Day celebrations in South Rift region

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Commissioner Hon Wilson Sossion led teachers during a TSC Open Day to commemorate World Teachers’ Day in the South Rift region, which includes Samburu, Laikipia, Narok, Bomet, Kajiado, Kericho and Nakuru counties.

The celebrations started at the TSC Rift Valley regional office in Nakuru, where all TSC county directors from Nakuru, Bomet, Kajiado, Narok, Laikipia, Samburu and Kericho, led by host Geoffrey Chemos, began a procession through Nakuru City streets.

Accompanied by Commissioner Sossion and teachers’ union officials from the seven South Rift counties, they criss-crossed Nakuru City before gathering at Christ the King Church, where the event was held.

Stakeholders in the teaching fraternity were given an opportunity to air their views on achievements and challenges they face while performing their duties.

The Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) representative in the South Rift region requested TSC to promote the majority of school heads who have stagnated in one job group for decades.

He also requested the Ministry of Education to disburse capitation funds on time to enable the smooth running of institutions.

“KEPSHA officials are in charge of ECDE, primary school and junior school. We urge the government to disburse adequate capitation funds on time to enhance the effective running of the institutions,” said the KEPSHA official.

The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) representative in the South Rift region urged TSC to promote the majority of junior school heads of institutions and other teachers who have stagnated in one job group for many years.

He also appreciated the support they receive from the Ministry of Education and TSC, which allows the smooth operation of institutions.

The KESSHA official also requested TSC to deploy school heads to institutions without them.

They also requested the government to disburse adequate capitation on time to enhance the smooth running of institutions.

Unions call for promotions to accompany awards

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) recognised the good work done by teachers to uplift education standards in the South Rift region.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) urged TSC to promote all teachers who excel in various fields, including academic and co-curricular activities.

“It is good to give teachers trophies and certificates for exemplary work, but we request TSC to ensure that these awards are followed by promotions in order to motivate our teachers and make them work better,” said the KNUT representative.

County Education Board representative Prof Moses Rotich urged TSC to ensure all schools have substantive heads of institutions.

“We have been visiting primary schools, junior schools and senior schools, and some of the schools do not have heads of institutions. We request TSC to address these challenges in order for our learners to get quality education in all education institutions in the South Rift region,” said Prof Rotich.

He also urged the Ministry of Education to ensure schools have adequate books and learning materials.

CEMASTEA representative Mercy Mbugua congratulated all teachers in the South Rift region, saying they are pillars of education.

Representatives of sub-county directors of education and TSC sub-county directors in the South Rift region also congratulated teachers for their hard work in schools and reminded them to continue moulding the lives of millions of Kenyan children.

Representatives of county directors of education and TSC county directors from the seven South Rift counties also congratulated all teachers as they celebrated World Teachers’ Day.

Sossion promises to address grievances

Nakuru County TSC Director Geoffrey Chemos, who was the host county director, thanked all teachers from the seven South Rift counties for honouring World Teachers’ Day.

“We thank our teachers in our schools who teach our students, mould their characters and guide them in the right direction. The Commission values all of you,” said Chemos.

Rift Valley regional quality assurance and standards officer at the Ministry of Education, Dr Joyce Oweke, congratulated all teachers in the South Rift region for their hard work and efforts to improve education quality in the region.

TSC Commissioner Wilson Sossion promised all education stakeholders that the Commission would address their grievances.
