National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Gladys Boss Shollei has urged the government not to move the over 1.6 million Grade 6 learners to secondary schools.
Speaking to the press, she said that the move to put the young learners in secondary school will cause a drastic increase in bullying cases.
“Please do not take the small children to secondary schools. As a mother of two generations of children, I have seen the difference. You cannot put them together,” she said.
According to Shollei, the age difference is like night and day. Because of this, there might be friction in their interaction leading to an unconducive environment for the Junior Secondary learners.
“The Grade Six children should be retained in primary school to allow the parents to mentor them until they are mature enough,” said Shollei.
