Kisii County Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri has urged communities to actively involve education professionals in the management and development of schools to improve learning outcomes and nurture responsible learners.

Speaking during a meeting with residents drawn from the four wards of Bomachoge Borabu Constituency, Okenyuri called on parents to take a more active role in guiding their children and maintaining close engagement with schools to help curb cases of student unrest and arson.

She noted that indiscipline in schools often mirrors challenges within families, where children may lack adequate guidance and emotional support.

“What happens in schools could be a reflection of a lack of harmony in our homes. Children are sometimes left to vent their frustrations on school property and their teachers,” she said.

The senator also commended former Bomachoge Member of Parliament (MP) Professor Zadoc Ogutu for his contribution to education development in the constituency, expressing surprise that his efforts did not earn him a second term in office.

Addressing the meeting, Prof. Ogutu said he harboured no political bitterness and remained committed to advancing education in the region.

“I am a professor, and I would like our people to see me first as a custodian and champion of education before viewing me as a politician,” he said.

He highlighted several education initiatives undertaken during his tenure, including strengthening schools and supporting academic excellence.

He cited Riokindo High School as one of the institutions that excelled in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, emerging among the top-performing schools in the region.

Prof. Ogutu also pointed to the equitable distribution of education bursaries, which enabled many bright but financially disadvantaged students to remain in school.

To address youth unemployment, he announced the formation of a team of professionals that will spearhead community sensitisation campaigns to encourage more students to enrol in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

He said increasing TVET enrolment would equip young people with practical skills needed in the labour market and contribute to addressing the country’s unemployment challenge.
