School sets up scholarships for needy students

Friends’ School  Malava Girls has set up a scholarship programme to sponsor bright and needy students admitted at the institution.

The school management led by Principal Rose Abuko and Board of Management (BOM) Chairman Francis Murambi said 19 students in total will benefit from the programme that is set to be rolled out annually. 15 out of the 19 students are going to get full sponsorship.

The chairman said they came up with the idea after receiving several girls whose parents were unable to raise school fees.

“As a school we felt the need to support their education as they scored good marks (300 and above) and were unable to get full uniform among other necessities needed and we decided to support them, some fully and others partially,” he said.

The BoM chairman also called on the media to report positively on the school progress stating that education was a sensitive matter that if misreported can bring repercussions to stakeholders.

The school principal Rose Abuko hailed the support that the CDF has been granting them and wished for the full reinstatement of the constituency funds to assist the parents in fee payment.

“We are experiencing hard economic times that have seen most parents unable to fully pay school fees but with the availability of bursary both at the county and national level, parents get cushioned a bit and it enable students to stay in school as their families fend for the balance. We have been one of the beneficiaries of the fund and we know our MP Malulu Injendi has this school in his heart in terms of bursary and infrastructure development,” she said.

She said they were also getting support from the Kakamega county Women rep Elsie Muhanda who was personally paying fees for one girl at the institution.

The manager urged more well-wishers to come on board and support their initiative of uplifting the girl child education wise to enable them become responsible citizens and be able to compete effectively in the job market as their male counterparts.

“We enrolled 109 Form Ones with a total population of 505 students and we are proud of 2022 KCSE results which we recorded a mean of 4.7,” she added.
