It is a boon for school leavers in three Coastal Counties after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced its TVET education support through a scholarship program.

The program targets youth aged between 18 and 35 years old from Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa with no formal training at the Diploma level or above.

In an advert KeNHA said applicants must be able to read and write with KCSE or KCPE certificates or those who may have dropped out of school with no formal training.

The beneficiaries will be awarded the scholarships to cover tuition and examination fees, material requirements for the courses and monthly subsistence allowance.

The program is funded under the two multinational projects Bagamoyo-Horohoro/Lunga Lunga-Malindi project and the Mombasa-Mariakani highway project under Phase 1 and Lot 1 respectively.

The projects are financed by the African Development Bank and a grant from the European Union.

The authority said applicants from low-income families and those living in informal settlements within the counties traversed by the project road will be considered.

“Preference will be given to youth who are orphaned and/or those from single parenthood families, young single mothers who meet the qualifications,” KeNHA said.

The Authority said those categorized as persons with disabilities will be considered.

Under the scholarship, courses will be offered at Christian Industrial Training Center, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, Mtongwe Vocational Training Centre, Vocational Training Centre-Kilifi and Mkwajuni Vocational Training Centre.

Courses include welding and fabrication, Motor vehicle mechanic, masonry, cake, bread making and decoration, basic electrical, basic tailoring, computer operator, basic hairdressing, plumbing and pipe fitting, beauty therapy grade III, II or I and metal processing technology.
