In a heartbreaking turn of events, an eight-year old girl drowned in Kathangaita area, Mavoko Sub-county of Machakos County, a result of the heavy rains that filled a trenches in the neighbourhood.
The saddening incident was confirmed by Athi River East Sub-county Police Commander Anderson Mbae who said that the young victim was a grade three pupil in a private school within the locality.
He noted that the child accidentally fell into the trench, which had become a hazard due to the ongoing heavy rains in the region.
Local authorities, including the police and emergency services, were swiftly alerted, but rescue efforts were fruitless as she was pronounced dead when the body was retrieved.
“The girl was playing with other children when she fell into the trench and drowned,” said the police boss.
Concerns have been raised about the safety of such trenches during the rainy season, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures and awareness campaigns to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The police boss urged residents, especially parents and guardians, to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of children, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when such hazards pose increased risks.
Cases of drowning in Machakos County have been rife as heavy downpours continue to pound in this rainy season.
