Effects of last year’s flash floods still felt in schools in Tana, Garissa

The aftermath of the destructive floods are evident in this TSC office in Garissa.

The recent wild and unforgiving flash floods along the mighty River Tana took a punitive toll on buildings in both Tana and Garissa counties, threatening to shut schools as access was greatly hampered for both learners and teachers.

The head teacher of Asako Primary School along the Tana Halima Mohamed said the raging floods not only destroyed the entire educational infrastructure including books, desks and other learning materials and equipment but grounded the mud walled kitchen and filled the pit latrines in the school compound.

Books, stationery and important documents are beyond salvage at the TSC offices and schools in the region.

‘’With no forthcoming help from anyone despite our passionate and desperate appeals, we have been and are still struggling to make ends meet since school reopened,” she lamented.

The same destructive elements were repeated in many schools in both riverine counties, subjecting many children to untold suffering.

The TSC county offices were not spared either, with the water rising to window levels.  A staff member anonymously told Education News that office stationery, including cabinets, computers and files were destroyed. The Garissa County office staff stayed away till New Year.
