Retired chief condemns exam cheats as enemies of society

Retired Chief Samuel Matara has said those who cheat or aid to cheat in exams are enemies of society.

A retired chief Samuel Matara has condemned those who steal and leak examinations, branding them as enemies of society because they undo the communities’ social fabric.

He said their actions lead to injustice as ill-prepared and unqualified people are churned out into sensitive professions like medicine, arguing that it is why we have quack engineers and doctors.

“Let society learn to avoid abetting evil in society because they lead to long lasting destruction of our people,” he said.

Matara was speaking at Keginga Secondary School where he mourned the principal Sarah Kabata who passed on in hospital yesterday after a short illness.

His sentiments were supported by Elizabeth Mwango, a businesswoman from Nyangusu town, who appealed to the courts to give the severest punishment possible as a deterrent measure.

She asked society to leave students to do examinations independently to enable suitable placements in universities, wondering what will happen to the manual labour economy if all students were helped to pass and flood universities.

“Let some of them fail and remain in the village to dig our graves and bury us when we die,” she said, causing laughter when she suggested that the failures make good gossipers in a balanced society.

“These people are good informants of the Nyumba Kumi groups and clan elders who make good judges in our communities,” she added, on a more serious note.
