Students have been challenged to reject school arson, drug and substance abuse, and other forms of indiscipline as they pursue academic excellence and responsible citizenship.
The appeal was made during the annual Young Catholic Students (YCS) Flag Day celebrations at St. Paul’s Amukura Boys High School, where hundreds of learners from across the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma gathered to renew their commitment to the movement’s ideals of faith, discipline, leadership and service.
Presiding over the Holy Mass, Catholic Diocese of Bungoma Bishop Mark Kadima urged learners to remain committed to their studies, uphold Christian values and make responsible choices that will secure a brighter future.
The bishop described education as the most reliable pathway to personal growth and national development, encouraging students to make prudent use of the opportunities available to them while in school.
He strongly condemned school arson, warning that the destruction of educational institutions disrupts learning, destroys valuable infrastructure and jeopardises the future of thousands of learners.
Bishop Kadima noted that parents, guardians and sponsors make enormous sacrifices to educate children and challenged learners to safeguard that investment through discipline, commitment and hard work.
The bishop further cautioned students against drug and substance abuse, unhealthy relationships and negative peer influence, saying such vices undermine academic performance, moral integrity and personal development.
He encouraged learners to cultivate good character, embrace discipline and strive for academic excellence so they can become responsible citizens and transformational leaders.
School commended
Earlier, Bishop Kadima commended St. Paul’s Amukura Boys High School Chief Principal Titus Isogoni for the school’s remarkable progress in academic performance, discipline and institutional development over the past two years.
He attributed the achievements to effective leadership and the collective commitment of teachers, learners, parents and the Board of Management.
