Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Dr. Esther Muoria, has called for an urgent transformation of Kenya’s vocational education sector, emphasizing the need for practical, industry-driven training.
Speaking at a sensitization forum held at Kiambu National Polytechnic, where over 300 principals, registrars, and departmental heads from Nairobi region’s TVET institutions had gathered, Dr. Muoria stressed that the core function of TVETs is to equip learners with hands-on skills that are directly applicable in the workforce.
Dr. Muoria also highlighted the implementation of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) modular curriculum, which is structured around the Know–Understand–Do philosophy.

“Since the May intake, more than 66,000 students have enrolled in modular programs across TVET institutions in the Nairobi region,” she said.
Muoria said a target has been set for the enrolment of two million trainees by December 2025, reinforcing a commitment to inclusive growth and empowerment through skills development.

She further directed institutional leaders to play an active role in ensuring successful implementation of the CBET curriculum.
“Principals, Deputy Principals, and Heads of Department are expected to drive awareness, provide technical guidance to trainers, and ensure compliance with the new curriculum framework,” she added.
