Kwale County Commissioner Steve Orinde has assured residents that the construction of the Regional Centre for Marine Transport and Port Logistics at Chitsakamatsa in Matuga is progressing well and remains on course for completion.
Speaking during an interview at the Kenya School of Government in Matuga sub-county, Orinde noted that the pace of construction has significantly improved following a high-profile visit by the Deputy President Kithure Kindiki earlier this year.
“The contractor has picked up speed, and we are now seeing tangible progress. The Deputy President’s visit injected a new sense of urgency and commitment to the project,” said Orinde.

He said that the institution enjoys full support from the national government and is expected to become a hub for maritime education, not just for the local community but for the entire East African region.

He said the government is determined to see the institution completed acknowledging few challenges such as lack of budget that had hindered its earlier progress.
Once operational, the facility is set to benefit the local people by opening up opportunities for training, employment, and innovation in marine transport and port logistics.
The institution will offer specialized courses in marine engineering, navigation, shipping logistics, and environmental management.

According to Orinde, the college is part of the government’s broader Blue Economy initiative, which aims to harness Kenya’s maritime resources for sustainable economic growth.
The administrator called on local youth to take an interest in the maritime sector, saying the government will ensure affordable access to training and future job opportunities once the centre is operational.
“This project belongs to the people of Kwale and beyond. We want our young men and women to be ready to take advantage of what is coming,” he said.
