Kenya National Parents Association Chairman Nicholas Maiyo has warned parents against paying extra school levies.
Speaking to the press recently, Maiyo said parents should pay fees based on their fees structure.
“I want to tell parents that bus fare, motivation fees and other additional luxuries are not part of the school fees and I am calling upon parents not pay such levies since they are meant to steal from parents,” said the Kenya National Parents Association Chairman.
Maiyo said he supports fully the call by the CS Education George Magoha allowing principals of secondary schools to send home students who have fees arrears.
“As parents, we support fully the call by CS Education George Mgaoha of sending home students who haven’t paid their fees. Our concern is that his statement could used as a licence to the principals to send children home to collect extra levies. Some parents have been calling me saying they have been forced to pay Sh5,000 bus fee and Sh 5,000 for motivation,” he added.
He called on parents across the country not to pay such levies, saying they should only pay fees according to the fee structure.
“We are calling on all parents to clear third term school fees to give us evidence so that we can present the evidence on extra levies to the CS Education. We will name and shame such schools,” Maiyo said.
He further said children from poor backgrounds should not be sent home because they haven’t paid fees as directed by the Cabinet Secretary for Education and any principal who will do contrary will face the full force of the law.
