Parents’ union boss faults parents over increased teenage pregnancies

The Kenya National Parents’ Association chairman Nicholas Maiyo has blamed parents for the increased cases of pregnancies among school girls.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret Maiyo said parents have failed in their mandates and only leaving it to teachers who have many children to take care of.

This comes after a report said that between January and February this year, Kenya recorded a total number of 45,700 pregnancies among adolescent girls across the country.

He said the cases have led to many students dropping out of school and their future being blurred.

“The reason as to why there are increased cases of teenage pregnancies is because parents have failed in their mandate of taking care and advising their children, only leaving it to teachers yet students after the coronavirus pandemic, have  spent more time with them than teachers,” said the Kenya National Parents’ Association chairman.

Maiyo further called on parents to take care of their children and ensure that they know their whereabouts to avoid early pregnancies.

“I want to urge parents to take care of their children since it is sad that some parents have left their roles to teachers leading to increased cases of pregnancies hence school drop at a tender age,” added the Kenya National Parents’ Association chairman.

He further said that chiefs have failed by negotiating with those who were involved in the heinous acts of impregnating young children.

“Such chiefs negotiating with parents should be arrested and charged since they are tampering with the future of young students and as the parents representative I will not allow such to happened,” said Maiyo.
