- Parents have been urged to take greater responsibility for instilling discipline and good morals in their children.
Retiring teacher Truphena Sasaka says parents should not leave the responsibility of raising children entirely to teachers.
She also called for stronger parent-teacher collaboration to support learners under Competency-Based Education.
Parents have been urged to take full responsibility for instilling good morals in their children during this holiday season.
The sentiments were echoed during a colourful retirement and thanksgiving ceremony for Luyeshe Primary and Junior School Head of Institution (HOI) Truphena Sasaka at her Babylon home in Butali Chegulo Ward, Malava Sub-County.
Issuing her retirement speech after 39 years of service as a teacher, Mrs Sasaka challenged parents to walk the talk on matters pertaining to the moral upbringing of their children, citing the rising cases of school unrest being witnessed across the country.
She said it was time parents owned up to their responsibilities and started instilling discipline in their children.
The outgoing Head of Institution cautioned parents against delegating their responsibilities to teachers, whose mandate is to teach and not administer discipline as assumed by many.
Teachers challenged to deliver
At the same time, she called on teachers to embrace the profession by ensuring that learners grasp what is being taught at school.
She said it was the duty of teachers to assist learners to understand what is taught for the benefit of learners and enable them to excel in their examinations.
She further warned teachers who only come to school to earn a monthly wage but do not care about the status of learners.
Failure by parents to groom their children is the start of learners losing direction and their future as the next generation of leaders.
Sasaka, however, hailed parents who have focused on instilling moral behaviour in their children, terming the practice a good direction that will shape and determine the future of learners.
She said collaboration between teachers and parents is key to the success of learners and advocated for a closer working relationship.
“Let us also come out and support schools, especially in this era of CBE where more practical learning is in place, so that learning can continue smoothly,” she said.

She also lashed out at sexual predators preying on young schoolgirls, urging them to desist and give the girls a chance to pursue their education.
