Garissa county commissioner Boaz Cherutich has warned parents of non-school going children that the risk arrests for blatant negligence.
Speaking to the press in his office in Garissa the county chief noted that crime in Garissa town has been on the rise over the past, adding that it is discouraging that similar crime is being reported in Mororo and Madogo which are Garissa town environs.
Cherutich warned that parent of children who will be arrested for committing crime will be summoned to explain why they have neglected their children.
“And our observation is that such crime is carried out by children who have dropped out of school. There is a group of children aged between 10-14 whom instead of being in school, they are terrorising people by robbing the residents,” said Cherutich.
He added: “In this light, we have directed that once suspects are arrested we will go for their parents to tell us why they aren’t taking care of their children. It is shameful children are robbing residents of the money , mobile phones and other valuables in town yet the parents care the least where their children have gotten such things from , we have to join hands to put an end to such a nuisance.”
In the same breadth Garissa SUPKEM Chairman Abdullahi Salat appealed to parents to bring up their children well adding that parents have failed in their parenting role.
“The buck stops with parents; I am appealing to caretakers to rise to the occasion and do what they are supposed to do, in bringing up their offspring in the right manner,’’ said Salat.
