Parents in Nyamira County have been asked to support their daughters academically by ensuring they receive quality education.
Speaking at Rigoma Girls Secondary School during their prize giving day, Rigoma ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Nyambega Gisesa asked parents to discard traditional notions that condemned the girl child and perceived her as inferior to their male counterparts.
“These girls you see in front of us will be great future leaders if they are given proper instructions to enable them identify their potential in education,” he said.
Gachuba ward MCA Henry Obwaya asked mothers to stay close to their young daughters and assist them to cope with adolescence.
He encouraged girls to embrace science subjects to increase their chances of pursuing marketable careers.
Obwaya thanked the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) for spearheading the initiative to provide sanitary towels to girls countrywide in a bid to ensure girls continue with their studies during their menses.
He lauded school principal Mrs. Jerusah Mosiori for steering the school to achieve impressive results in the 2022 KCSE examinations.
Saying that the school is the only girls’ school in Masaba North sub-county that admits students across the country, Obwaya expressed the need for expansion to accommodate the high student population.
“There is need for the management to think of expanding this school or ask the government to build another one in the sub-county to cater for our girls,” he said.
Principal Mosiori lauded teachers, parents, students and other education stakeholders saying their contributions also led to the stellar 2022 KCSE results.
She said that the school sent 40 out of 76 students to University and recorded a mean of 6.7 which translates to grade C+.
The principal cited a few challenges like overstretched classrooms and reluctance of school fees payment by parents but expressed her optimism that the school will perform better in this year’s national examinations.
