More than 90 young people in Ruiru Constituency have enrolled in a county-sponsored driving course in the latest youth empowerment initiative aimed at equipping them with marketable skills and improving their chances of securing employment.
The trainees, studying at Petanns Driving School in Ruiru, are currently sitting theory examinations ahead of their practical driving tests scheduled for next week, according to Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha.
The driving programme is part of a broader skills development initiative targeting unemployed youth across Kiambu County through short vocational courses designed to enhance self-employment and job opportunities.
Youth acquire practical skills
Beyond driving, beneficiaries are also receiving training in catering, hairdressing, beauty and cosmetology, with county leaders saying the courses have been selected to respond to growing demand for practical and income-generating skills.
Wamuratha said the programme is being expanded to other constituencies, with implementation already underway in different parts of the county.
“Our goal is to equip young people with practical skills that can help them secure employment or start their own businesses,” she said.
The initiative comes amid increasing efforts by county leaders to address youth unemployment by investing in technical and vocational training, which has become a key pillar of economic empowerment programmes across Kiambu.

If successfully scaled up, the programme is expected to provide hundreds more young people with industry-recognised skills, easing their transition into the labour market while promoting entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
