More than 1,000 young people from Lamu County have completed an intensive digital literacy training programme, acquiring skills to access online jobs, conduct research, and use the internet safely in a milestone that underscores the county government’s efforts to build a digitally empowered population.

The graduates, drawn from all 10 wards in the county, were feted on June 11 during a graduation ceremony held at the Lamu Maritime and Innovation Centre. Lamu Governor Issa Timamy presided over the event.

Governor reaffirms digital agenda

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Timamy congratulated the graduates and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Lamu a fully digital county.

He noted that the county government has already established nine digital hubs and 28 free public Wi-Fi hotspots at strategic locations across Lamu, a feat he described as a first among counties in Kenya.

The governor also announced that the Department of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) has set aside additional funding for an advanced training programme targeting top performers from the first cohort, which will be rolled out before the end of the year.

Early digital learning planned

Timamy further revealed plans to introduce digital learning at an early age, with Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) learners set to receive tablets as part of an early exposure initiative.

Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar, who led the university’s delegation at the event, said the training conducted in March 2026 focused on equipping participants with practical digital skills to help them create opportunities and secure jobs in today’s technology-driven economy.

The programme was implemented through the county’s Department of ICT.

Youth urged to embrace opportunities

Lamu Deputy Governor Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj urged the graduates to take full advantage of their newly acquired skills and tap into the many income-generating opportunities available online.

ICT County Executive Committee Member Aisha Shariff thanked the governor for championing the initiative and commended the graduates for their enthusiasm throughout the training.

She noted that the overwhelming turnout exceeded expectations, reflecting the eagerness among Lamu’s youth to participate in the digital economy.
