Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo has expressed confidence in the growth and performance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the county, saying the 26 institutions are on the right track to equip young people with practical skills for employment and self-employment.
The governor made the remarks during an inspection of ongoing development projects at Ekerubo Bigege Technical Training College.
Investment in Infrastructure
He noted that the county government, working with the national government and development partners, has prioritised infrastructure development, expansion of course offerings and provision of modern equipment to make the institutions more competitive.
“TVETs are the backbone of our skills revolution in Nyamira. We are seeing real progress in enrolment, completion rates and the quality of training. These colleges are no longer an afterthought; they are central to our plan to reduce youth unemployment,” he said.
At Ekerubo Bigege, the governor inspected new workshops, classrooms and a student hostel block currently under construction.
Call for Digital Literacy
During the visit, the governor and his team urged students and trainers to embrace digital literacy as a tool for improving learning and productivity.
“Your courses now call for research and innovation. Digital skills will help you access information, solve problems and compete anywhere,” he told students and trainers.
Support for Learners
County officials said bursaries and capitation support have been increased to ensure students from low-income families can access training without dropping out.
They added that partnerships with local industries are being strengthened to provide students with hands-on industrial attachments and improve job placement opportunities after graduation.
Towards Full Accreditation
Students and trainers at Ekerubo Bigege welcomed the visit, saying improved facilities and additional trainers would help them meet national competency standards.
