Nyamagwa’s tournament fate hangs in balance as Sameta appeal stalls county games draw

• St John’s Nyamagwa’s participation in the Kisii County KSSSA games remains uncertain as their sub-county win over Sameta is under appeal over allegations of fielding an ineligible player.

• The unresolved dispute is set to affect Pool D and the knockout stage as the county games continue at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School.

The fate of St John’s Nyamagwa Boys remains uncertain as the Kisii County Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) soccer competitions kick off at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School.

Nyamagwa, who defeated Sameta Boys 2-1 in the sub-county finals, are under scrutiny following an appeal lodged by Sameta over the alleged fielding of an ineligible player. The ruling on the dispute was delayed after schools closed abruptly amid nationwide unrest, leaving the matter unresolved as county games begin.

The Kisii County Term Two games are being held from 17 to 20 June 2026 at Cardinal Otunga High School, with day two of competition underway today. Football remains a key discipline, with boys’ teams divided into four pools.

Pool A features St Joseph’s Ong’icha, Ndonyo Mixed, and Nyamagwa Boys. Pool B comprises Machongo, Nyabisase Mixed, and Itierio Boys. Pool C includes Nyanchwa, Mentembe, and Nyakoora, while Pool D has defending champions Sameta Boys, Nduru Boys, and Nyakorere Boys.

The unresolved Nyamagwa-Sameta case is expected to significantly influence the Pool D standings and the knockout stage draw. As of press time, Kisii County KSSSA Organising Secretary Simeon Ongaga had not issued an update on the tribunal’s decision. Should the ruling go against Nyamagwa, Sameta could either be reinstated or a replay ordered before progression to the next stage.

Meanwhile, other sporting disciplines are also in progress at the venue, including volleyball, netball, rugby sevens, racquet games, basketball 3×3, chess, and scrabble.

Rugby sevens for both boys and girls is being hosted at Nyamache playground, while Cardinal Otunga remains the main hub for football and indoor competitions.

In the girls’ football category, Pool A has Mobamba, Nyabigena, and Eramba; Pool B includes Omwari, Nyasore, and Amaiko; Pool C features Gianchere, Nyabisase, and Kerongorori; while Pool D comprises Etago, Sengera Parish, and Metembe. Pool-stage matches for both boys and girls continue tomorrow, 18 June.
