Nyakongo Boys Senior School in Kisii County has been elevated to Category One (C1), granting the institution national school status in a major recognition of its long-standing contribution to education.
The elevation was announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba as part of the government’s ongoing changes in the categorisation of secondary schools under the new Senior School education structure.
The development has been welcomed by the Nyakongo community, former students and education stakeholders, who say the new status reflects the school’s steady growth and record of academic excellence.
For nearly six decades, Nyakongo Boys has played a significant role in providing secondary education and nurturing learners who have gone on to make their mark in different sectors of society.
Over the years, the institution has built a reputation for producing strong academic results while also developing learners through co-curricular activities and leadership programmes.
Its alumni include professionals and leaders who have contributed to the development of their communities and the country at large.
New status raises school’s profile
The C1 status is expected to raise the school’s profile and create opportunities for it to attract learners from across the country. National schools traditionally draw students from a wider geographical area and are expected to offer a broader range of learning opportunities.
The elevation also comes at a time when Kenya is transitioning to the Competency-Based Education system, with Senior Schools being organised into different categories to support the implementation of the new curriculum.
