Teenage mothers in Kisumu county have a reason to smile after a non-profit organization organized a cycling event to raise funds to help them continue with their education.

The Health and Economic Development Strategy Organization (HEDSO) held the bicycle cycling event, dubbed ‘Ride to Her Future’ in Kisumu to also assist the girls to be economically empowered.

Tyson Okello, HEDSO Programme Coordinator said the cycling event was a part of the ‘Knit Her Future’ initiative aimed at engaging the local community, particularly adolescents and young women, to understand the challenges facing them better.

“This feedback will guide the implementation of solutions that directly address these issues, such as economic exploitation in exchange for basic needs like sanitary pads,” he said.

Okello said that the initiative aims at providing education and training for young mothers who dropped out of school due to early pregnancy.

In collaboration with other non-governmental organizations, he said that the initiative seeks to bring lasting change to vulnerable communities in the lake region, empowering girls through education and training for a brighter future.

Okello added that pregnancies should not mean the end of life to teenagers in society.

He said that the initiative offers skills training in areas such as pastry, knitting, and liquid soap production to empower the beneficiaries by providing them with practical skills that could lead to economic independence.

One of the participants, Abuta Teresa, emphasized the importance of raising awareness regarding the exploitation of young girls.
